“Are they trying to boost the German economy or ours?”
A district of Shanghai, worried by declines in consumer spending, has added a lucky draw to its attempts to boost the local economy. According to the China Daily, anyone who spend’s Rmb200 ($29) in the district’s nine department stores will be eligible to play the lottery. The first prize is a Mercedes-Benz C200K worth Rmb320,000. Other prizes, totalling Rmb2 million, will be given away, including 20 gram gold bars. Wang Qiwei, a local official, describes the lottery as “a special act at a special time”. The lottery – which runs till May 10 – is forecast to generate Rmb100 million of sales for the stores. A total of three Mercs are up for grabs.
