China has discovered God, and his name is apparently Sir Alex Ferguson. The Manchester United manager was greeted with adulation during the team’s recent trip to China where the English club crushed Hangzhou Greentown 8-2. United have 71 million fans in China, and banners were unfurled referring to ‘Fergie’ as “God”. Hou Xiaojun, who runs website fergie.cn, told China Daily: “I completely trust Fergie. If I met him I would say ‘You are my God, forever’”. Ferguson was taken aback by his new status as a deity, calling the reception last weekend “something of a shock”. Ferguson added: “It never ceases to amaze me the admiration that Manchester United attracts in the Far East and none more so than here today.”
