Liu Yang is on a mission, and it is not one his wife is very happy about. The 35 year-old has sunk his life savings into a cheese shop in Beijing. Le Fromager du Pekin, as the shop is known, makes its own Camembert-style cheeses. And Liu is convinced that the Chinese will – like him – become converts to the dairy product.
Liu’s love affair with ‘smelly cheese’ began while studying in Europe and he became so enamoured he enrolled in a cheesemaking course in France. Mrs Liu is less bullish, reports the UK’s Daily Telegraph. The shop is only selling 50 cheeses a week, mostly to foreigners. Liu admits: “My wife has complicated feelings about the cheese shop. She is very worried. She wanted me to get a job in a bank.”
