Hockey mum to hit Hong Kong

“It’s darned surprising how well this place has done since the Brits gave it back to the Japanese in 1997…”

The woman who introduced the wink into mainstream politics – as well as the peachy phrase ‘You betcha’ – is set to make her first foreign speech; and it’s to be in Hong Kong. Former Alaskan governor and vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin will speak at an investor conference later this month.

Palin is not noted for her foreign policy experience and has been lampooned for earlier remarks on how Russia’s proximity to Alaska has aided her grasp of international affairs. The big question on this trip is whether the self-proclaimed “maverick” will offer any views on Beijing’s policies. Wags note she will be able to see China from her hotel window. Will this make her an expert on Sino-American relations?
