Going green

Going green

Painting over the cracks is a familiar expression, but in China it is being taken literally. Xinhua News Agency reports that the local government in Shaanxi’s Hua County has come up with an innovative solution to deforested mountainsides: paint them green. The paint job has been underway since March, when bureaucrats were told to fix the environmental damage left by 300 quarries. Replanting trees would take a while. Painting them in, on the other hand, gave the mountainsides a more ‘verdant’ feel in an instant. The local land bureau describes the move as part of its “comprehensive efforts governing the issue of the abandoned quarries”. Thousands of square metres have got the artistic treatment, reports Xinhua.
