Mr and Mrs Zhang had been trying for a child for three years, but unsuccessfully. And when they visited a hospital it soon became clear why. The couple from Wuhan – both in their thirties – had not had sex – ever. The Chutian Golden Newspaper reports that the doctor was stunned to discover that the couple were under the impression that, by sleeping in the same bed, Mrs Zhang would conceive.
It was a strange misconception, the newspaper thought, given he holds a PhD and she a Master’s. Commentating on the strange case Xiang Deping, the dean of Social Sciences at Central China Normal University, saw it as further evidence of why sex education needs to be part of the high school curriculum. Currently it isn’t taught to students. That might explain, says the Wuhan doctor, why Mr and Mrs Zhang also thought that kissing and holding hands could lead to pregnancy too.
