Expensive trip

Expensive trip

A whole new spin on the term ‘travelling on expenses’ courtesy of Hubei this week.

According to the Beijing Times, a provincial committee went on an inspection tour to the impoverished county of Zigui. But an audit then showed that – in 20 days away – the visiting officials spent a total of Rmb801,950 ($125,667). There must have been some serious partying: they forked out Rmb148,000 for cigarettes and alcohol alone. Perhaps they then felt trips to the gym were required – a further Rmb40,297 was spent on sportswear. The officials also chartered a boat to visit the Three Gorges, Chongqing and Guang’an at a cost of Rmb88,500.

The Beijing Times notes the purpose of the trip to Zigui was “to supervise the implementation of honest government, accountability and honest administration”.
