For police in Shenzhen it was a case of arresting the wrong man, but still nabbing a felon. Earlier this month they apprehended a murderer from Hubei province – but did so by accident. The criminal in question thought he’d be safe in Shenzhen, having stolen another man’s identity card. But his attempt to assume a new identity backfired, reports Southern Metropolis Daily. In what must be a chance in a million, it turned out the ID card he’d stolen belonged to another wanted man. So when a patrolling policeman asked to see it and checked it out, the imposter was apprehended anyway. Once he was taken back to the police station, it was quickly deduced that he wasn’t the fugitive in question. But he was still arrested, after his name turned up on a police database as wanted for murdering a fellow villager in Jingshan County.
