Football fans are known for their acid humour. And the good folk of Birmingham in the UK have been directing their own at Carson Yeung, who bought their club in 2009 for $94 million. Since his purchase Birmingham City has slipped into the second tier of English football, prompting pictures in the media of one supporter’s banner that read: “Made in Birmingham. Destroyed in Hong Kong.” So angry fans will have been pleased by this week’s news that Yeung has resigned from all positions at the club.
Described by the South China Morning Post as “beleaguered”, Yeung was arrested in 2011 and has been fighting five counts of money laundering in the Hong Kong courts. “The resignations come as Yeung awaits verdicts on the charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty,” the SCMP reports.
