Hans Kundnani of the European Council on Foreign Relations says German policymakers have been discussing the dangers of confrontation between China and Japan over islands they respectively call the Diaoyus and the Senkakus. Because of its focus on China as an export market, an island conflict would put German business executives in a tough spot. “There is an increasing sense that Germany’s close ties with China could become very problematic,” adds Kundnani.
