BYD’s colourful boss Wang Chuanfu says Beijing’s desire to promote electric cars is more about national security than pollution. At the unveiling of the firm’s new electric car with Daimler last month, Wang said policymakers were worried that China imports 60% of its oil and that 60% of it comes through the South China Sea, where territorial disputes have flared up.
