It’s not unusual to see two friends fighting over a restaurant bill. But in the town of Xiangtang in Jiangxi things went a little too far late last month. According to China News Network two old comrades – who hadn’t seen each other for more than a decade – got together for a meal. Copious amounts of drinking ensued and by the time it came to pay both were severely inebriated. The man surnamed Xu insisted that he should foot the bill as host, but his friend Huang demanded that he be allowed to pay. Other diners were disconcerted as their drunken exchange heated up, and became outright distressed when Xu picked up a chair and smashed it over Huang. Their violent brawl was broken up by staff, but only after Xu had broken Huang’s right arm and had him hospitalised. Apart from the broken limb, one of Huang’s front teeth was also knocked out. Xu later visited his friend in hospital and apologised (“I was drunk and muddled. It was my fault”) and offered to pay all medical expenses (it is unclear who eventually paid the dinner bill though). In return Huang said the incident was just a misunderstanding and declined to prosecute. So if someone asks to pay the restaurant bill in China, WiC’s advice to readers is: let them.
