Planet China

As we reported last week, actress Zhao Wei (and her real estate tycoon husband) recently made a profit of about Rmb800 million ($128.9 billion) cashing-in a portion of her stake in Alibaba Pictures, a Hong Kong-listed movie studio which has soared in value. That eye-watering payday might have sparked the nation’s weirdest lawsuit. A man in Shanghai has filed with the People’s Court of Pudong New District, suing Zhao for causing him spiritual damage. According to Legal Daily the man was watching a rerun of her 1999 drama Princess Huanzhu and became convinced she was staring at him through the TV with her “big eyes”. The absurdity of the claim soon went viral on the internet. “Is this guy insane? What’s wrong if an actress has big eyes,” one weibo user wrote, while another made the pertinent point, “This kind of weird lawsuit should be condemned; it is a waste of the court’s time”.
