Staff at Zhangze Rural Commercial Bank were left feeling a little sore recently, after a training session resulted in eight employees getting a public spanking.
They were attending a training programme run by Shanghai Hongfeng Leadership Academy. Ranked as the lowest performing team, the unfortunate eight were lined up on stage and questioned why they had failed to “exceed themselves”. Claiming that their self-criticism wasn’t sufficient, one of Hongfeng’s trainers then pulled out a stick and delivered what an English public schoolboy might term as ‘six of the best’ to the underperforming group. Video footage of the incident shows one recipient recoiling in pain and being told to move her hands out of the way after trying to protect herself. Since the video emerged, two bank executives have been suspended and the trainer has issued an apology, albeit to the bank rather than its staff. “This incident also offered a great lesson to myself. It reminds me that I should improve my teaching methods,” he explained.
