US Defence Secretary James Mattis says China’s deployment of missiles on disputed islands in the South China Sea is designed to intimidate neighbours. Chinese representatives at the Shangri La Dialogue in Singapore, where Mattis made the remarks, described the comments as “irresponsible” and said Beijing’s actions were aimed at “national defence”.
