“China is not there yet at all… They will say they will support sustainability, but it doesn’t mean they will buy sustainable goods”


New World Development boss Adrian Cheng dismisses the notion that sustainable cosmetics will be popular in China. In an unusually candid interview with the Financial Times, Cheng described the mistakes he’d made when he tried to revamp New World’s 30 Chinese department stores just over a decade ago. Equating what he did with ‘la-la land’ he made the extraordinary admission: “We took out all the needs of customers”.
