What a way to fail

Celebrating prematurely has been the undoing of many people throughout history. Just ask George W Bush about his 2003 “Mission Accomplished” banner – a phrase that the Boston Globe said “haunted” his presidency when Iraq subsequently descended into chaos. Over in Chongqing a man this week discovered the dangers of the premature victory lap too. According to Guancha the individual failed his driving test for a very unusual reason: he was deemed to be drunk. The man, surnamed Deng, was so confident he would pass that he and his buddies held a boozy celebration the night before. So boozy, in fact, that when he turned up at the test centre the next morning the examiner said he reeked of alcohol. Deng initially tried to fend off the invigilator’s suspicions by saying he’d spilled alcohol on his clothes that morning – he even took a few off to prove his claim. Nobody at the test centre was convinced and the police were called in to breathalyse him. After this breath test confirmed that he was ‘under the influence’, he confessed to the cops about his ill-advised binge the night before. It could be a while before he gets his licence…
