
A statement from Aso Taro, Japan’s deputy prime minister, saying his country would join with its US ally to defend Taiwan against an invasion from the Chinese mainland. He described such a move as “an existential threat” for Japan, adding “We need to consider seriously that Okinawa could be next”. A spokesperson for Beijing denounced Aso’s remarks as “extremely wrong and dangerous”.
