Cainiao translates as ‘rookie’ in Chinese but the company already boasts an impressive track record in coordinating parcel delivery across Alibaba’s e-commerce empire. It is now offering similar services to the logistics sector through an open source platform that supports thousands of new partners in warehousing, shipping and trucking.
Cainiao’s focus is on building a network that brings together data and delivery, giving merchants a view of the most cost-and-time-efficient options, based upon real-time data on potential logistics partners and routes. It has also invested in distribution capacity of its own by building 30 core warehouses across China and chartering more than 1,000 cargo flights to carry goods when the pandemic was at its worst.
