WeLion is pioneering the commercialisation of solid-state batteries, which offer more efficient alternatives to the lithium-ion and ternary batteries currently used in electric vehicles. Solid-state batteries aim to be smaller and lighter than lithium-ion ones. However, they have a tendency to warp after repeated charging, so it has taken longer than expected for designs to move beyond the lab. 

WeLion is working with carmaker NIO on an interim solution of a semi solid-state battery that will be rolled out in the forthcoming ET7 model by the fourth quarter of this year. The company claims that the battery will have a 1,000km range, thanks to its higher energy density.

Huawei, Xiaomi and private equity firm Shunwei Capital have all invested in Beijing-based WeLion. NIO is also a major investor.
