“Huge” is how Jonathan Anderson describes last week’s balance of payments data from China. Anderson – president of boutique research house Emerging Advisors Group – talked to WiC last week on why the new trade data is so significant. He argues that the stellar export gains the Chinese enjoyed in 2020 can no longer be seen as a blip brought on by the pandemic. Instead he thinks the gains look ‘stickier’ and here to stay. He also predicts a stronger renminbi as trade tensions worsen again between Washington and Beijing.
